Top birdwatching site near Brancaster is the RSPB Titchwell Marsh. A waymarked trail leads directly down from the RSPB visitor centre to the beach which stretches for 2 miles and features the remains of an old forest and World War II tank. As the Titchwell trail runs down to the sea it passes the stunning freshwater marshes, with detours off leading to bird hides. The Titchwell Marsh is a unique area in Britain. In January 1953 this stretch of coast in the east of England was devastated by flooding. The natural disaster claimed 300 lives and was caused by a combined tidal surge, storm and high tide. Since the disaster the area has reverted to saltmarsh.
A mecca for birdwatchers, Titchwell Marsh features marsh harriers in summer and across the lagoons visitors can expect to see many terns, avocets and gulls. RSPB Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve is clearly signposted off the A149 coast road.
Brancaster village on the North Norfolk Coast was once home to the Roman settlement of Branodunum.
