Burnham Market Tourist Information

Burnham Market is located just 3 miles inland of the Norfolk Coast AONB and affords easy access on to the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail. Birdwatching is popular around Burnham Market, one of seven Burnhams. Offshore barrier island Scolt Head Island is a National Nature Reserve and important site for breeding seabirds. Ferries to Scolt Head Island are available from Burnham Overy Staithe (April to September). The area is also famous as the birthplace of Admiral Lord Nelson who was born in the village of Burnham Thorpe. Nelson's local pub in Burnham Thorpe still welcomes visitors.

Scolt Head Island NNR

Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve is an offshore barrier island near the Burnhams on the North Norfolk Coast. The shifting coastline here is constantly growing westwards and the island nature reserve features a mix of saltmarsh, intertidal sand and mud flats and sand dunes.

Large numbers of breeding birds including terns and wintering wildfowl and waders have their home on Scolt Head Island which is difficult to access. Ferries run from the village of Burnham Overy Staithe to Scolt Head Island (April to September) situated along the A149.

Things to Do in Burnham Market

Burnham Market, one of the seven Burnhams in this area of the North Norfolk Coast, sits just 3 miles inland from the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The pretty village of Burnham Market is fondly known as Chelsea-On-Sea and features delightful independent shops, fine hotels, outstanding restaurants and traditional pubs and stylish boutiques. The Burnhams on the North Norfolk Coast have a famous son. Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson was born in the village of Burnham Thorpe, the son of a vicar in 1758. Local pub in Burnham Thorpe The Plough changed its name to The Lord Nelson in 1798 in honour of Nelson. The historic Lord Nelson pub in Burnham Thorpe welcomes visitors still today, serving real ales straight from the cask. Nelson regularly visited the pub when he returned to Burnham Thorpe.

Close to Burnham Market are the remains of Creake Abbey, a ruined Augustinian abbey. Attractions around Creake Abbey include the wonderful craft studios, antiques and cafes at the Creake Abbey Studios. Barn owls famously inhabit the Creake Abbey ruins and a friendly RSPB trailer is onsite.

Coastal walking around Burnham Market and the Burnhams is spectacular. The Norfolk Coast Path National Trail runs along the coast here which is incredibly popular with birdwatchers. Attractions near Burnham Market on the coast include the award winning Holkham Bay beach fronted by dunes and pine forests. The Holkham Estate just east of the Burnhams features a historic hall, walled gardens, the Bygones Museum and extensive beautiful parklands inhabited by deer.

Visit Dalegate Market in Burnham Deepdale on the Norfolk Coast. This outstanding retail site and holiday village with on-site hostel, holiday cottages and camping contains fine jewellery shops and pottery shops, a visitor centre, a cafe, a funky beach clothing shop and more. Themed markets and events regularly take place at Dalegate Market.
