From Wells Quay the beach road pushes down for about 1 mile to beautiful Wells beach flanted by pinewoods distinctive in the area. Holkham Estate & Holkham Beach

Holkham Beach is one of Britain's most spectacular expanses of sandy beach ranking with the beauty of the Northumberland Coast beaches further north along the east coast of Britain. Visitors to Holkham beach park up on the edge of the pine forest. A pathway leads through the beautiful shady pinewoods direct to the beach (5-10 minute walk).

Holkham beach sits within the wider Holkham National Nature Reserve which features a mixed landscape of endless sand dunes, pinewoods, marshes, green pastures, creeks and saltings. The Norfolk Coast Path National Trail runs along the coast through the area.

The Holkham Estate just west of Wells contains a range of historic attractions, outdoor activities, beautiful gardens and fascinating museums. Holkham Hall, a favourite property of stately home expert and writer Simon Jenkins, is a grand and opulent Palladian hall situated within the extensive parkland of the Holkham estate. Stunning art and decor with work by local craftsmen feature on a tour of the Hall.

The Walled Gardens at Holkham are a treasure, originally laid out by Samuel Wyatt in the late 1700s. Family attractions at Holkham include the popular Bygones Museum & History of Farming with exhibition of domestic and agricultural memorabilia. Further exhibits range from historic mechanical toys to vintage cars, heritage steam engines and a beautiful collection of historic horse carriages. The parkland at Holkham is home to a large herd of fallow deer and red deer. Numerous trails including The Lake Walk and Nature Trail wind around the estate. Visitors can also enjoy The Lake Cruise in the summer months.

The Wells & Walsingham Light Railway

Famous attraction in Wells the the delightful Wells & Walsingham Light Railway, the longest 10 1/4 narrow gauge railway in existance. The light railway runs between Wells Beach and Harbour to historic Walsingham 3 miles south of Wells. En-route the railway winds through beautiful countryside under five bridges. Main station is Wells station with its restored signal box. Refreshments and railway souvenirs are available at Wells station.

The Wells & Walsingham Light Railway operates from the beginning of April daily until the end of October. Up-to-date timetables are listed on the railway's website with 3 to 5 trains departing from Wells station daily.

Things to Do in Wells-next-the-Sea

Beautiful Wells-next-the-Sea is centrally situated on the North Norfolk heritage coast close to award winning Holkham Bay beach. Boasting a stunning quayside featuring best fish and chips, Wells-next-the-Sea is a hotspot for charming specialist gift shops, outstanding alfresco cafes, fine seafood restaurants and traditional real ale pubs. Long sweeping sandy beaches flanked by pine forests feature around Wells and Holkham, both of which feature best beaches on the Norfolk Coast.

The narrow Wells High Street and Staithe Street pushes down towards Wells historic harbour and quay. Lining High Street and Staithe Street are a superb selection of Wells craft shops, stylish boutiques, souvenir shops, cafes, tearooms and sandwich shops serving fine crab sandwiches. Locally caught seafood in Wells features in the many fine fish and chip restaurants and takeaways and in the town. You'll find Wells crab houses around the Quayside and the finest seafood restaurants.

Independent galleries in Wells are numerous and the town features shows and events throughout the year including the popular Wells Carnival Week annually in late July/early August. From Wells Harbour with its charming fishing boats and heritage quayside buildings the Beach Road pushes down to breathtaking Wells Beach flanked by pine forests. Wells beach is around one mile from Wells Quayside. The charming Wells Harbour Railway, a small gauge railway runs regularly between Wells town and harbour to Pinewoods Holiday Park and Wells Beach.

Pretty quiet villages near Wells like Stiffkey contain further premier restaurants and real ale traditional pubs. Just south of Wells (3 miles) is medieval Walsingham which is connected to Wells via the scenic Wells & Walsingham Light Railway. Walsingham has been a site of pilgrimage since the medieval period and historic shrines are still in Walsingham alongside the famous Walsingham Abbey ruins. Walsingham is an easy daytrip from Wells via the light railway. Find Wells-next-the-Sea Tourist Information Centre on pretty narrow Staithe Street which leads down to the Quay.
